Social risk on Moscow roads may decrease to the level of aviation with the introduction of autonomous vehicles

With the introduction of autonomous vehicles in Moscow, cars can reach the level of mortality just like in aviation, where the level of social risk is about 3% of the current death rate in road accidents, said Alexander Polyakov, Director of the Moscow Research and Development Institute for Urban Transportation MosTransProekt, during Transport week 2020.

He explained that according to the 2019 results, the death rate in road accidents in the capital was about 3.5 people per 100 thousand of the population.

«Introduction of autonomous vehicles will eliminate the human factor from the possible causes of accidents, which will potentially reduce the social risk on Moscows roads by 70-90%. In terms of mortality, cars can approach the level of aviation, where the social risk is only about 3% of the current level of road deaths,» Polyakov said.

According to Mr. Polyakov, about 42% of those injured in traffic accidents in Moscow last year were in accidents for reasons that will completely disappear with the widespread introduction of autonomous vehicles — those being traffic violations and driving while intoxicated.

«Another 54% of the victims were involved in an accident for reasons that would be much less likely with the use of autonomous vehicles — among them collisions, accidents on highways and with the participation of trucks, collisions with pedestrians in the yards,» he emphasized.
