Moscow Metro to increase its Wi-Fi speed to 200 Mbps

World’s first underground wireless project to sharply increase its speed and stability.

Deputy Mayor for Transport Maxim Liksutov announced that Moscow Metro will modernize its Wi-Fi network in 2021. The transport operator plans to install 100 additional base stations, increase the bandwidth of the communication channel and start testing the latest Wi-Fi 6 network. As a result, passengers will have access to a maximum Internet speed of more than 200 Mbps.

In 2020, Metro passengers have downloaded more than 24 petabytes of data via Wi-Fi which amounts to 5.6 million films in high quality. 50% of Wi-Fi users had an Android operational system, 49% account for iOS with 1% of passengers using Windows Phone OS. The average speed mounted to 45 Mbps.

Moscow Metro was the first underground transport network to deploy a full-scale wireless connection in 2013. In 2015, the Wireless Broadband Alliance awarded Moscow Metro’s free Wi-Fi project as the world's best public Wi-Fi network.
