Moscow’s Troika card expands to Nizhny Novgorod

Russia’s 6th largest city is to adopt Moscow’s ever-expanding ticketing system.

Nizhny Novgorod (1.2 million residents) became the fourth Russian city to officially announce the adoption of Moscow’s ticketing system. The first stage is expected to take place in 2021. Subsequently, it is expected to be adopted in all the passenger transport of Nizhny Novgorod Region (3.2 million residents). The region’s Governor Gleb Nikitin explains that it might boost tourism in the historic city.

Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport Maxim Liksutov adds that new users will receive a differentiated fare system and a digital personal account to manage the card’s balance. Earlier, he had stated that adoption of Troika may halve regional expenses on ticketing system.

«It is yet another step to develop a single transport infrastructure for all regions of Russia, where a single card would be used on different types of transport,» — Maxim Liksutov.

The card has been extending its presence since November 2020 when it was launched in Tula Region. Now it awaits a full-scope launch in Moscow Region that encircles the Moscow City and has been testing Troika since December, 15. Later that month, Ulyanovsk Region signed an agreement on adopting the card. In total, the Moscow Government is negotiating with more than 25 regions.
