The icebreaker tugboat will appear on the Moskva River in 2022

The construction of an icebreaker tugboat has begun — it will appear in Moscow in 2022. The icebreaker will prepare the river for the navigation of river trams in winter and will also help in emergency situations on the water. The main tasks of the tugboat are towing vessels, participation in emergency rescue duties, transportation of cargo and special personnel.

According to the technical specification, the length of the vessel will be 29.2 meters, it will have cabins for 4 crew members. This icebreaker will be the first vessel built for Mosgortrans in the last 30 years.

Moscow is targeted to create convenient, predictable and safe water transport.  It will allow 1.5 million residents to move around Moscow much faster in 2022 already. In July Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin inspected the model of the future Moscow passenger electric river tram – the first in the world that works all year round, even in winter.Future river vessels will be 100% eco-friendly, without harmful emissions. Same as city electric buses – this is very important for the Moscow water area and the health of all residents.

“River transport in Moscow will be regular, and it should not depend on weather conditions. The main task of the icebreaker-tugboat is to prepare the river for ships in winter. River transport have to work like a Swiss clock: clearly, accurately and smoothly-at any temperature. The icebreaker will cope with the thickness of the ice even up to 40 cm. Next year, the first 2 river routes will connect several districts and become part of a unified transport system” — Maksim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport.
