The Moscow Metro starts preparing for winter

The Moscow Metro began installing second entrance doors in the framework of preparing to the winter season. The second doors are intended to protect the passenger zone from the cold air. By the end of October, the network will supply approximately 5000 such doors. They are installed before the persistent freezing so that the entrance halls could maintain warmth.

Moscow Transport carries out two big seasonal preparations – for summer and for winter.  It includes maintenance of both technical and passenger infrastructure.  Moscow Metro begins preparing for the cold weather already in the spring — the first step is a comprehensive maintenance of heating units. In total, Metro has more than 290 heating substations that keep the entrance halls and stations warm.

Other elements of the infrastructure have also been checked. In winter, Metro keeps comfortable temperature with the help of air curtains and heated stairs. The ventilation also changes its operation mode depending on season. All metro train conditioners are already operating in winter mode: the temperature in the cars is several degrees lower so that passengers do not feel too warm in their winter clothes. Employees of the Moscow Metro microclimate laboratory monitor the temperature at stations on a daily basis to make sure that it is comfortable for metro users.

"The Mayor of Moscow instructed us to make Moscow Transport comfortable for everyone – in anticipation of the winter cold, all systems involved in the transport operation in winter are being checked and prepared. We pay special attention is maintaining a comfortable temperature for passengers both on on-surface urban transport, as well as in Metro and the MCD. For example, air conditioners in all metro trains are already operating in winter mode — passengers feel comfortable even in warm clothes", — the Deputy Mayor for Transport Maksim Liksutov.
