iCrosswalk - a pedestrian crossing of the future has appeared in Moscow

A pedestrian crossing of the future has appeared in Moscow. iCrosswalk is a project of the Moscow Transport Innovations startup accelerator.

We have already tested it and found out that the probability of an accident with a pedestrian is reduced by 82%. The project also helps to solve the problem of road safety in the Moscow region and in other regions of Russia.

When a pedestrian approaches the crossing, the system analyzes the trajectory of a pedestrian's movement. If a person intends to make a crossing, the system includes signal elements, an information board with the inscription «Give way to pedestrian" and floodlights illuminating the pedestrian crossing area. At the same time, a T-7 type traffic light and LED road signs are operating around the clock. In the evening the projection of road markings is also included. This is necessary to attract the driver's attention on the people at the pedestrian crossing, especially at night. This allows the driver to react in a timely manner, slow the speed down and avoid an accident.

Testing was carried out from April to July 2021 on Bolotnikovskaya Street in Moscow (Southern Administrative District). The solution was piloted together with the Traffic Management Center. The pilot project showed that the probability of an emergency with pedestrians decreased by 82%, the average speed of cars increased by 27%, and the waiting time for a pedestrian at a pedestrian crossing decreased by 30%. The system can recognize adults, children and even pets.

After the first stage of the acceleration program, the author of the idea came up with a new solution - the Smart Stop intelligent stop system. Special sensors will analyze the operation of information boards and report possible errors. The project is currently being piloted in Mosgortrans.

«The Moscow Mayor has set a task to improve the quality of transport services and to launch new convenient services for citizens. We especially appreciate our Moscow breakthrough developments and ideas. If you have such ideas - participate in the Moscow Transport Innovations project. The best projects, like a safe crosswalk, will receive our support: implementation in the Moscow transport complex» — said Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport.
