The Moscow tram: 2021 achievements and future plans

The Moscow Department of Transport reports that, in 2021, headway in Moscow has become less than 4 minutes on 75% of tram routes, it is one of the lowest headways in the world.

In five years, the tram fleet has been extensively renewed. Moscow has received 461 modern trams, which is 30 thousand new passenger seats. Thanks to the life cycle contracts, the vehicles are under complete control 24/7: service and repairs are provided by the manufacturer throughout the 30 years. This has eliminated problems with the vehicles operating on the lines. After the transfer of trams under the supervision of the Moscow Metro, repair works are carried outwithout closing the lines on weekdays.

Here are some plans for 2022:

● 70% of the track overhaul will be carried out by the Moscow Metro to speed up and improve the quality of work;

● 20 switches will be renewed;

● around 90 km of the contact line and feeder cables will be renovated;

● up to 100 new trams will be launched

This year Moscow also plans to develop a plan to build a new tram route on the Akadimika Sakharova Avenue. Once the project is finalized, it will be discussed with residents.  According to the estimations, this new tramline will help to unload one of the busiest metro stations in Moscow – Komsomolskaya – up to 50 thousand people and more than 125 thousand people will use it daily.

«Trams are the most environmentally friendly and efficient surface transport. They carry almost 3 times more passengers per hour than buses. By the order of the Moscow Mayor, we will develop the Moscow tram network to make the tram as reliable as the Moscow Metro», - said Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport.

In 2021 Moscow Metro started to operate tram infrastructure. The single management and applying strict metro standards aim at increasing speed,  enhancing  maintenance, and improving passenger’s experience of the Moscow tram.
